Journal #1 Chapters 1-3 from the Perspective of Jem

What's Happened to Scout?

Scout can get so angry, so malevolent. I cought her shoving a boy named walter's face in the dirt. She claimed that he got her in trouble. In my opinion if she had just been quiet she wouldn't have gotten in trouble, he got her very irked because she was apperantly just trying to help. Scout still has much to learn. I think she knows now that Miss Caroline doesn't take lightly to scout being smarter than her. I know scout is pretty smart. Calpurnia tought her to do everything she knows. I don't like this school much. I can't really connect with anyone here. Eventhough I told her not to talk to me at school, I've talked to her the most since I've been here. Me and scout are the ordinary siblings. I am some-what condescending. But she's my sister and actually fun to play with. I just don't want people to think I like playing with a first grader. I'm a fith grader and I don't want to start this year with a bad reputation.
People think I should care about my smaller arm, but I don't mind. As long as I can throw and catch I don't worry too much. I don't think every part of people's bodies should have to be so eccentric. If we can get by day by day. I don't think it matters.
Maycomb is an interesting town. Poor town as well. We have the Ewells who's father is a drunk, carless, bad excuse of a father and the Ewell kids don't even know what maners are. I heard the Ewell kid in first grade called Miss Caroline some pretty mean names. Even made her cry. And we also have the Cunningham's who I like because my family has done buisness with them for a while. Not one of the Cunninghams excepts money because they know they can't pay anyone back. They payed my father Atticus back by giving us goods. They really try to persevere through their strife. And that's fine with me.
